opening scene process and evaluation

The plan for the opening scene was to create a scene inspired by Edgar Wright's Shaun Of The Dead/Hot Fuzz style quick edit montage.

I decided to use over exaggerated sounds for these shots to fit within the Edgar Wright style I was going for.

For the game cover I used Photoshop.

Originally, the cover was going to be a mix of all three scenes, but then I changed it to make it more Planet Games orientated and to include the spaceship so it links to Planet Games.

I am happy with the cover, but due to the quick edit style I chose, you can only see it for a very short time. I considered a way of overcoming this problem by having a pause between the first and second shot, but it would interrupt the flow of the shot, so I stuck with the Edgar Wright style.

I decided to use Planet Games' website to give the viewer an idea of where the advert is going and the purpose.
I used a copyright free TV interference effect for this shot
I imported this clip into After Effects to add a TV interference effect to my hands having already created multiple layers of the video clip. My hands are on a separate layer to the rest of the footage and then sandwiched in between the background and the foreground. I had to separate the layers frame-by-frame.

Using After Effects I had a background layer with just the computer and the interference effect screen without me in shot, then I overlapped a cut out of myself from the prior shot and added position and scale keyframes and minimised the shot until it was too small to see in the centre of the interference screen giving the impression of warping.

Similar to how I did the interference effect, I just added a scaled keyframe to give the illusion of zooming in. I got the vortex effect from youtube (copyright free)

I am happy with the way this scene turned out. The only thing I would improve, given the opportunity, I would increase the brightness of the shot where the disk is inserted in the tray.  But overall, I'm really happy.

first person shooter FMP process and evaluation

I created the UFO using Adobe Illustrator.

I drew the outline of half a UFO then went on the 3D drop down menu and used "Revolve"

This image was my inspiration for the flying saucer.

Below is my final flying saucer design. I added the glow in photoshop. If I had the opportunity to do this project again, I would spend more time making the UFO like my inspiration and put animated lights and make it look as though it was revolving.

I created several different UFOs. I did this to create a selection for which one I would choose that was closest to the flying saucer that I envisioned.

I started out keying the green screen using keylight 1.2
I then increased the screen gain to get a cleaner image and to resize it so the gun wasn't taking up the whole screen

I imported the background photo I took in Bath and dragged the layer to the bottom of the timeline. Of the photos I took, I chose this one because I liked the depth this image gives to the scene.

The photos below were others I took around Bath but chose not to use.

If I had the opportunity to do this project again I would preferred a less urban background, maybe a field  or a forest. A more natural environment.

I then imported two royalty free green screen effects (impact sparks/muzzleflash) from youtube and took away the green using keylight 1.2
I imported the UFO. This was a PNG so it had no background.

I created a position keyframe to fit the trajectory of the flying saucer with the movement of the gun. I exported it to Adobe Premier Pro then imported sound effects from freesound and youtube (copyright free).

I am happy with this, but with more time I would tweak the timing of the impact sparks and I would also add a health bar for the flying saucer to help the viewer know what the goal of this scene is. I would also somehow include Planet Games logo or some reference

I created the music for this video using Garageband

Originally I was going to have targets pop up, but I changed this to a UFO because it was more Planet Games orientated and it's more interesting and dynamic and because a UFO will appeal to a more universal audience and if I had an alternative to the UFO it would be a person or a target which would be either too violent or only appeal to a minority of the audience..
