Game FMP Test

This is a Flash animation combined with images taken of myself. I took the two images of myself in different running poses, but the poses were too similar so it doesn't work that well. When I come to the final video I'll use more frames and change the pose. I created the background in photoshop based on Mario games.

This is what I created in Photoshop as an improved backdrop for the platform scene. This is going to be almost identical to the finished one.

Below is a test for the first-person shooter segment of my advert. I decided to put a forest backdrop because my original idea would be set in a shooting range in a forest. This low-res image is just from Google. The gun is a water pistol and I replaced the background using Adobe Aftereffects without green screen for the finished advert. For the finished advert I would hopefully use a green screen. I am still deciding if I should use an animated gun or practical effects.

Above and below are an animated gun I created in photoshop. I started out creating a 2D image then converted the layer to 3D. To make the image move I had four duplicated layers of the gun all in slightly different positions, then I looped it and sped it up in iMovie because Premiere Pro was not available at that time.

The image below was created the same way as the above image. I superimposed my hand on top of the gun to experiment if to if this would work - merging artificial images with real-life images. It didn't quite match up because I couldn't get the hand positions right to look believable.

Progress review

Moving Image
I've had some previous experience with Moving Image in completed courses such as Film Studies, Photography. My knowledge consisted of mostly shot types, some camera work and the basics of Premier Pro. Since September I have improved my shot-type knowledge such as the "5 shot method" and more obscure camera angles. I have also learned about key light/fill light/back light which is used to improve the impact of the shot and the atmosphere. This year I've had my first proper go at directing a film, a crew, and actors - which went really well. For my short film I also had to learn/research more advanced photoshop techniques to get the effect I wanted.
The thing I found most difficult with Moving Image is the interviews. We had to go out on the street and select members of the public and ask them if we had their permission to interview them. Only a very small minority of the public would let us film them.

Interactive
With this subject I mainly knew about the basics of Flash and Photoshop from previous courses. I learned InDesign, Illustrator, and I Stop Motion, while also expanding my knowledge of Flash and Photoshop. I enjoyed the stop-start animation the most because it was good to use a different type of software like iStop motion because in the past I've only used Imovie, Premier Pro and Windows Movie Maker to make stop-start animations. I incorporated the skills I used in this module of the course to make a UFO in Illustrator for my FMP. I found the colour work difficult, for example the colour wheels and colour harmony.

Publishing/Media Theory
This was the first time I've used a WACOM tablet to create a comic book within Publishing. The WACOM tablet was difficult to get used to, but I was quite pleased with the result. I enjoyed the photoshop and indesign tutorials, this expanded my knowledge in both fields and they were very useful to learn and experiment with to find new shortcuts and ways of doing things. I didn't enjoy doing the Christmas cards because this did not capture my imagination and I wasn't as enthusiastic about this aspect of publishing. Media Theory has mostly been incorporated in all three subjects. In publishing we have looked into the eye-path of comic books and layouts. In Moving Image we looked at script and stories. The eye-path topic was new to me and learning about this helped perfect my final comic design.

FMP ideas and research, and storyboard evaluation

This is the Planet Games website. The website includes static game adverts, contact information, store locations, but excluded from this is any form of video advertising because they are a small chain based in Somerset that don't have a big enough budget or mainstream audience.

These three adverts merge reality with videogames. This is the main concept of my final project.

This sprite is the inspiration for the platform scene.

This advert is different to the rest because it shows the evolution of games which I hope to include in my advert for Planet Games

My idea would be a short film where the gamer transitions into the game and jumps from one game to another. This is advertising Planet Games. The videos above relate to my idea because real life merges with the game world. The opening shot would be a gamer sitting down to play a console but then the character gets teleported into the game. I did multiple storyboards because initially I didn't know if Planet Games would want to work with me or not and I had a time limit. So in the first scene I was originally going to have a game character's head superimposed over my head as this merged reality with games and the idea behind it was that he belongs in the game. I scrapped this idea because Planet Games got in touch and the focus of the video changed towards Planet Games rather than a short film.

Below is the original ending for my short film if Planet Games didn't get back to me. The idea behind this one is that the character teleports out of the game and walks away and game characters jump out of the screen and follow him without him knowing. This ending was inspired by Christopher Nolan's Inception because it is an ambiguous ending so the viewer is not sure if he's out of the game or in another level.

Below is the ending that involves Planet Games. The idea is the game character gets out of the game and the coins that he's been collecting throughout the game he spends in Planet Games and gets a big bag full of great value games that implies the message that Planet Games is good value for money. The idea behind the digital money is if you trade in games you get even better value, but this didn't come across in the final product that well.

Below is similar to the idea that I want for my first-person shooter scene.

comic book evaluation

I am pleased with some of the panels, images, and characters - especially the one with three flies looking down at spider ninja (Arino Kitekushi). I am also happy with the experimental panel of the spider's face. I like how it's in a star shape to create suspense and intrigue. I think I have experimented with a few different panels shapes and sizes and for the most part I am happy with the result.

If I had the chance to go back and do this comic again I would create the backgrounds of the image in a more stylised design that coincides with the characters scribbly effect. I would also change some of the boxes for example the first panel on page 1 should have had more space so the viewer could see more detail and what he's doing. I would make several different speech bubbles and have more dialogue. If I had more time I would finish the story as I planned to on the storyboard. I would try out different fonts and font techniques as below. my original design was to do different fonts with different characters to help the reader distinguish how each character speaks in a different way. I later changed this for the most part, which I regret

I used photoshop because I was most comfortable with this program and I've used it in previous projects. I learned and experimented with the WACOM tablet which gave me some of the inspiration to do the scribbling/stylised effect. I started out trying to draw perfectly formed characters and backgrounds with the tablet but quickly realised I'd never used it before and it was difficult to use that way. So I created an effect that was unique but at the same time suited the characters and comic book.
I tried to consider the eyepath which I would never have considered before doing this project, so I researched panels and differing eyepaths . I originally would have gone with the more simplistic approach of just doing rectangles.
I also experimented with doing a motion comic which was a failed attempt. The reason why I never completed the motion comic was that it was difficult to show the story in a motion comic form without it becoming straight forward animation.

I would like to use more Illustrator and Indesign for any future projects. I would also like to push myself out of my comfort zone of photoshop. I have many years of experience with photoshop but only a matter of weeks with Indesign and Illustrator. I would also like to use the WACOM tablet more to create more complex designs.

I used this alphabet to create a name for my spider ninja - Arino Kitekushi - which according to this diagram means spider.

CPR ad idea

I decided to do a flash animation with photoshop assets (so I can use the WACOM tablet and create the essence in more detail). It was going to be an animation per each step of CPR and it was going to be a smartphone app. This would bring it down on the level of a young person. We got two animations finished. If we had longer we would have done one for each step which would have been more effective for the overall project.

This is the smartphone for which the video was meant to be presented on. If our group was going to do this again I would suggest not using a copyright image such as the iphone, I would create my own. I didn't create this image, Will (a member of my group) did, but I created the above CPR animation.

motion comic experiment

comic book panel experiments

I prefer the more dynamic page layouts over the more simplistic layouts that just use rectangles. I think the more dynamic layouts such as the Spider-Man page are more intriguing and interesting than the standard, boring and generic layouts. This will impact the reader's attention to the page, but if the page was too chaotic the eye-path would be disrupted and it would not intrigue the reader, just confuse them.

key light /fill light

key light is the most important light a photographer/cinematographer would use to light the majority of the face/subject. Key lights have more lightbulbs and/or a stronger beam. Meanwhile, the fill light would be less strong but light the other side of the face and "fill in" gaps. Backlight is when the lighting is behind the subject to create an illuminating or dramatic effect and stand out from the background. This creates a three-dimensional effect.
